Alpmuseum Fasons
The Prättigau Mountain-Dairy and Sawmill Museum
With Schesaplana to provide a dramatic backdrop, the Fasons Alpine Museum, situated at 1,715 metres above sea level, provides an insight into life in a traditional mountain cheese dairy. The hut, in whose smoke-blackened interior cheese was still made up until 1985, uses historical objects like antique cream-ladles and cheese-harps to document the former day to day life of the area’s dairy- and herdsmen. In addition to the Alpine hut, which dates from 1877, the Museum Association also maintains the historic Valar Sawmill, which was built in 1897 to supply wood for the construction of the Schesplana House and other nearby buildings in the same style. The sawmill, which was previously in operation near Seewis, was bought by Andreas Jost (1853-1919), a local hunter and owner of the Schesaplana House, and dragged by donkey and horse to the Alpine location of Valar Brook. Powered by a waterwheel, the sawmill continued to operate until 1950. The Fasons Museum’s Alpine hut from 1877 and Valar Sawmill, which dates back to 1897, are both officially protected historic buildings. Both buildings have close links to the pre-Schesaplana history of the Alps, as the sawmill also supplied timber used in the construction of the Schesaplana House dating from 1898 (the present-day Schesaplana Swiss Alpine Club hut).
