Festung Albula
The historic military fortification on the Albula Pass
The fortification, located on the Albula Pass Road, was built in five months in the summer and autumn of 1938 on behalf of the Swiss army by the private construction company Gebrüder Gartmann, Thusis.
All of the approximately 300 fortified defensive structures, that were built in the canton of Graubünden shortly before or during the Second World War, were built by private companies. A huge challenge, especially at a time when a large proportion of the male population was mobilised for military service (Active Service) and the Italian "Muratori" were not in Switzerland either.
The exposed, three-storied concrete bunker, situated directly adjacent to the pass road, was renovated during the summer months of 2015-2017 so that it can serve as a representative, worthy monument of an intense period of Swiss history (World War II, Cold War). Designers, contractors, the Denkmalpflege [built heritage conservation] and the owner worked closely together to renovate the structure’s interior and exterior. Today, it is owned by the association Verein Militärhistorische Anlagen Albulatal and has been regularly open to the public during the summer months since 2019.
