Hohen Rätien

The Hohen Rätien castle complex is located on a rocky plateau above Thusis and Sils in Domleschg

Hohen Rätien has been a mystery for centuries. The historical complex is situated on a large plateau and is one of the oldest settlements in Switzerland - an exceptional Grison cultural asset with 4000 years of eventful history. Hohen Rätien lies directly and in the middle of the path of the transalpine flow of traffic and goods transport over the Splügen Pass. Traces of settlement from the Bronze and Iron Ages (2500–800 BC), remains of a Roman station, late antique sacred buildings with a baptistery and baptistery from the 5th century and the church of St. Johann and Viktor, the center of a large parish, bear witness to one of the most impressive checkered histories around. The inner castle, thought to be a protected goods handling area featuring a mule and trader hostel and much more, can still be discovered today. A wonderful view into the Domleschg, the Heinzenberg and the Viamala Gorge and cozy spots around the fountain invite you to linger and let yourself be carried into bygone times.
