The museum of the Disentis Benedictine abbey
The Disentis Abbey museum shows the natural and cultural history dimensions of Surselva, whereby the main emphasis is on the 1300 years history of the abbey. This is done with many exhibits that range from the early Middle Ages through to the modern age. What are of outstanding significance are liturgical objects, robes and statues that date back to the early 13th century. The cultural history department is enriched by a special exhibition featuring Russian and Greek Orthodox icons. The natural history department offers a geological overview of the region and shows minerals and crystals from Surselva, as well as the local fauna. One topic is the scientific work of the Disentis Conventuals. Disentis Abbey Museum has a large collection which concentrates upon liturgical and other objects from the abbey’s history. The oldest objects in the museum date back to around 1200. The museum also has textiles spanning six centuries, as well as various items from Christian tradition. The museum is enriched by a special exhibition of icons form the Orthodox church.
