Kulturhaus Rosengarten

The Prättigau’s local folk museum, cultural archive, library and basement theatre all in one building

The Kulturhaus Rosengarten is home to the Heimatmuseum Prättigau, the Kulturarchiv Prättigau as well as the library and a basement theatre. The Cultural Archive collects and archives written and pictorial materials which document the Prättigau valley’s past and present and its inhabitants. The archive contains, for example, written documents related to Walser culture and the dialect spoken in the Prättigau. The museum’s historical collection encompasses fire pumps, household appliances and tools used in traditional crafts as well as models of the castle ruins and of some of the Rhaetian Railway train stations in the Prättigau. In combination with the public-sector archives, the Heimatmuseum and the Kulturarchiv serve as the valley's collective memory. The Rosengarten library has a wide range of reading material and film material that can be borrowed. The stately mansion zum Rosengarten was built in the middle of the 16th century for the local noble family von Ott and remained in the family’s possession until 1971. Since 1981 the building has served as a cultural centre containing a theatre, museum and an archive.
