Militärmuseum St. Luzisteig
Graubünden's museum of defence and military matters
The St. Luzisteig Military Museum covers military matters and their relationship to traffic over the Alpine pass between Maienfeld and the Liechtenstein village of Balzers, along with the history of the area’s defences, most of which are characterised by the construction styles of Johann Ardüser (1585-1665), Caspar Werdmüller (1663-1744) and Richard La Nicca (1794-1883). The exhibition area, which is housed in the former arsenal, recounts the history of the Luzisteig Pass from 1966 to 2004, when it was still used by trains of pack horses, along with background information on the significance of horses to the Swiss Army. The history of the Luzisteig Pass, and its use by trains of pack horses, are recounted by means of a documentary film and a series of original exhibits. The museum is also a point of departure for various signposted hiking routes relating to military history, such as the trail leading to Rohanschanze. The Luzisteig Military Museum is housed in what was once an armoury. The collection consists not only of items from the arsenal, but also of individual historical objects that are significant to the military defence of the canton of Graubünden and of Switzerland in general. A large part of the collection is formed by objects relating to the trains of pack horses that once performed transport tasks for the Swiss Army.
