Muglin da Ftan
The only high Alpine double mill museum
In Ftan, thanks to the Swiss Heritage Society, the last genuine water-driven double flour mill in the high Alpine region has been maintained. The older of the two mills was built in early 17th century and the second in 1832. Both sets of grinding apparatus with their upper millstones are driven by the interaction between water paddles, wooden shafts and powerful wooden gears. The mill, the erstwhile miller’s instruments, the historical tools and implements show the cultural history of grain cultivation in the Lower Engadine. This exhibition in the original living accommodation of the miller’s family Florineth also illustrates documentations, photographs and history of local grain culture and mills. In early 2015, the mill was transferred into the ownership of a recently established, regional foundation.
