Museo Ciäsa Granda
The museum for natural and cultural history of the Bergell valley
In the Ciäsa Granda, the usual contrast between nature and culture seems to have been lifted away: In this patrician house from the 16th century, the geological particularities of the Bregaglia valley and the flora and fauna are featured, as is the traditional lifestyle of the valley inhabitants. A special emphasis is placed upon the artistic works of Augusto Giacometti (1877-1947), Giovanni Giacometti (1868-1933) and his sons Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) and Diego Giacometti (1902-1985). Works by Varlin (conventional name Willy Guggenheim, 1900-1977) are also part of the collection. The Bregaglia valley, with its special harmony between culture and nature, is also presented with entire reconstructions of pre-industrial workshops. There is also a Cascina, a chestnut drying hut. The artistic works of Willy Guggenheim and the Giacometti family constitute the cultural emphasis in the Ciäsa Granda. Traditional cultural and craft aspects are also presented, for example, in the shape of a reconstructed smithy.
