Museo del Tabacco Brusio
The memorial to the production of tobacco in the Val Poschiavo
The Museo del Tabacco is located in a former tobacco factory in Brusio. The factory was opened in 1840 and documents, as the last building that already existed at that time, the era of tobacco growing and processing in the Val Poschiavo. During the heyday of tobacco processing around 1860, up to 80 tons of tobacco were produced annually on roughly 60 hectares of land in the Val Poschiavo. The tobacco was processed in factories which employed more than 100 workers, mostly women. Dozens of peasant families benefited from tobacco cultivation. The Museo del Tabacco allows a glimpse into tobacco processing in earlier times. The factory building is equipped with historical machines and old electric motors. The museum, which will open in summer 2024, will also display original documents such as pictures and diplomas.
