National Park Centre in Zernez
The information and experience centre of the National Park
The National Park Centre at Zernez provides interactive information both about the fauna and flora in the Swiss National Park, as well as its philosophy and history. Inside the cubical building by the architect Valerio Olgiati from 2008, modules such as a mountain-splitting machine enable a playful approach to nature. The National Park Centre correspondingly sees itself not just as a classical natural museum with a wealth of exhibits, but rather as an experience-oriented cultural centre for the largest wilderness area of the Alps. The permanent exhibition covering 800 square metres is supplemented with rotating exhibitions every season. The National Park, founded in 1914 between the Engadine and Val Müstair and covering 170 square kilometres, is the oldest national park in the Alps. The National Park Centre in Zernez communicates the natural connections in the largest wilderness area of the Alps in an experience-oriented way. Consequently the goal is not the presentation of as many exhibits as possible, but rather interactive communication. Thus for example the feeding habits of the spotted nutcracker are presented in the form of a search game for pine nuts.
