Sils Museum, Andrea Robbi Stiftung

The only museum exhibiting works by Andrea Robbi

The discovery of a forgotten artist: Andrea Robbi (1864-1945) was seen as a talented artist in the days of his youth, having studied at academies of arts in Munich, Dresden and Paris, yet he stopped painting in 1898. It was not until decades after his death that his work was rediscovered by Upper Engadine artist Giuliano Pedretti (1924-2012). The work is open to public viewing since 1994 at the Andrea Robbi Museum in Sils Maria. The museum, domiciled at the historic Chesa Fonio, also presents the oil paintings, drawings and water colours by Andrea Robbi in relationship to contemporary art. During two exhibitions annually, invited artists are able to take a closer look at the work of Andrea Robbi. The Andrea Robbi Museum is the only institution that exhibits works by the artist Andrea Robbi. Although many of these works (oil paintings, drawings, water colours) are undated or unfinished, the high quality is recognizable. It has never been fully established why Andrea Robbi gave up painting in 1898. Reasons could be the death of his parents as well as a perceived rejection of his works and character.
