Società Storica Valposchiavo
The Società Storica Valposchiavo (SSVP) was founded in June 1996. Its primary objectives include regional historical research, the development of expertise, and the management of the documentation centre, where documents, publications, and other materials of historical interest about the region are collected and preserved. The centre houses approximately 15,000 documents and around 2,000 publications. The 2,500 photographs in the Luigi Gisep photo archive have been transferred to iStoria, Archivi fotografici Valposchiavo, and are accessible online.
In addition, the SSVP frequently hosts lectures for the regional public. It also publishes research papers in its own series of studies – now comprising ten volumes – and organises conferences and meetings, often in collaboration with partner associations from Graubünden and the province of Sondrio (e.g. on the conquest of Valtellina in 1512, the Sacro Macello of 1620 and the Reformation in Graubünden). In its annual bulletin, the society reports on its activities and publishes short articles on local history.
Whenever possible, the SSVP supports trainees and students conducting research for school or academic work, responds to dozens of email enquiries from around the world on genealogical research, and assists dedicated writers in preparing articles for various local journals.
Equally importantly, it assists museums and other institutions in the valley that require specific information on local history. For the Gemeindearchiv Poschiavo (municipal archive), the SSVP has updated the indexes of the oldest sources, which have now been digitised.
Thanks to the experience gained and the connections established over time, the history of the Valposchiavo is finding new ways to be told and recognised beyond local borders. The association's activities are supported by nearly 200 members.
