Stadtarchiv Chur

The historical memory of the town of Chur

The Stadtarchiv Chur is the centre for the documentation of the history of Graubünden’s capital. The archive was established as early as the late Middle Ages and has been located in the historical town hall in the centre of Chur’s old town for more than 550 years. Due to a lack of space and conservation-related concerns, the Stadtarchiv is moving into a new building opposite the Stadthaus in 2024. The Stadtarchiv preserves the official records of the town of Chur and the former municipalities of Hof Chur (seat of the Bishop of Chur), Maladers and Haldenstein, which are now part of the municipality of Chur. The archive material of the former political Kreise (earlier administrative units) of Chur, Churwalden and Schanfigg can also be found in the Stadtarchiv. In addition, the Stadtarchiv extensively collects records from associations, companies and private individuals. The Stadtarchiv’s holdings span more than 1000 years of history. This time span is documented by more than 2000 linear metres of files, roughly 1500 deeds and 80,000 photographs. In addition, there are other archive materials. The holdings of the Stadtarchiv Chur are listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National and Regional Importance. Thus, they have the same protection status as monuments of the calibre of the cathedral in Chur.
