WalseRama

The museum of the foundation Walserkultur

The foundation for the preservation of Walser culture, located at Bernhardinerstrasse, operates the WalseRama in the historical Suste (goods handling centre with a warehouse with an administrative area), dating from 1680, as a museum. The building, which was built during the era of the “Port” (a historical transport cooperative) in the Free State of the Three Leagues and has shaped the villagescape of Nufenen, houses a collection of cultural heritage artefacts from the Walser people in the Rheinwald. The unique, cultural-historical exhibits give visitors a glimpse into the historical everyday lives of the old Walser people. Subjects include, among others, the transportation of goods and people over the Splügen and San Bernardino Passes in the Rheinwald during the times of pack animal traffic, as well as, following the construction of the Commerzialstrasse road in 1823, transport by carriage, wagon and horse-drawn sleigh in winter. Visitors will also discover objects of domestic and rural life in the various rooms of the museum, including subjects such as traditional Alpine dairying, woodworking, the “Buuchi” (boiling laundry in ash lye), weaving and many more. In addition, the WalseRama houses the cultural archive for books, written documents, photos and audio documents from living and deceased contemporary witnesses, which is currently being set up. The foundation offers expert-guided group tours in German, Italian, French and English throughout the year, requiring prior reservation.
