From Pucks to Helmets – the HCD and the Wintersportmuseum Davos

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, countless barons, countesses, writers, musicians, and poets visited Davos seeking treatment for their illnesses. The high-altitude climate, combined with medical therapies, was believed to have a therapeutic effect on tuberculosis patients. This infectious disease reached epidemic levels in the 1890s, claiming thousands of lives annually in Switzerland alone.

It might seem surprising, against this sombre backdrop, that Davos evolved into a winter sports destination. Yet many convalescing guests did not remain idle. Sledging became a popular pastime, while ice skating and skiing soon took root. By 1918, Davos saw the founding of its first hockey club.

Today’s Hockey Club Davos (HCD), officially established in 1921, needs little introduction. With 31 championship titles, it remains the most successful team in Swiss hockey. Background stories about the club and artefacts from its storied history are showcased at the Wintersportmuseum in Davos. As the name suggests, the museum also presents rarities and tales from the broader world of winter sports.
