When Ice and Snow Take Centre Stage

From 6 to 22 February, ice and snow will once again take centre stage for sports enthusiasts around the world: the 25th Winter Olympics are approaching. Some competitions will be held in the immediate neighbourhood of Graubünden – in Livigno (freestyle skiing, snowboarding) and in Bormio (alpine skiing, ski mountaineering).

Almost a hundred years ago, Graubünden also found itself captivated by the Olympic Games, when St Moritz hosted the Winter Games in 1928 (and again in 1948). At that time, disciplines such as freestyle skiing, snowboarding, alpine skiing or ski mountaineering did not yet exist. Nevertheless, around 464 athletes (more than 3,500 will take part in 2026) from 25 countries (2026: 93) competed for gold in sports such as bobsleigh, ice hockey and cross-country skiing – disciplines that still enjoy great popularity in Graubünden today.

Those wishing to escape the bustle in Livigno and Bormio can follow the Games from home – or take a look at the historical records from 1928 on Porta Cultura.
