Archäologischer Dienst Graubünden

Inventory and protection of endangered sites and finds in the canton

The Archaeological Services Graubünden were created in 1967 by the canton of Graubünden as a new cantonal agency. Today, the Archaeological Services, which were integrated as a department into the cantonal Office of Culture in 2003, are responsible for the following core tasks, based on the cantonal Nature and Cultural Heritage Protection Act: the excavation of archaeological sites threatened or destroyed by measures related to construction; the construction-related archaeological examination of historically valuable buildings threatened or destroyed by measures related to construction; assistance with restoration works; the preservation of archaeological finds and important sites. Preservation does not only include archiving the finds and securing the sites. The cantonal Act requires that, in order to evaluate historical significance, a scientific assessment be necessary. The findings are publicized by the Archaeological Services by means of lectures, guided tours and publications, thus raising the awareness and understanding of Graubünden’s rich soil-and-construction-related archaeological heritage. In a nutshell, the Archaeological Services’ responsibilities are: examining – preserving – imparting knowledge.
