Ateliers Turo Pedretti / Giuliano Pedretti

Located on the edge of the forest in Christolais above the village of Samedan, Turo Pedretti's first artist's studio house was built in 1946 by the architect Jachen Ulrich Könz from Guarda. It was completely destroyed by an avalanche during the so-called Winter of Terror in 1951. In 1952, the Pedretti family of artists therefore moved into a new house in Celerina, which was also built by the architect Jachen Ulrich Könz.

It was here that the painter Turo Pedretti and his sons Giuliano and Gian created a body of work of international significance.

Atelier Turo Pedretti, Celerina

After Turo Pedretti’s (1896–1964) death, his studio was converted into an exhibition space where selections of his paintings are displayed twice a year in themed exhibitions.

An informative film by Roy Oppenheim, "Turo Pedretti, ein grosser Maler des Engadins" (One of the Engadin’s Great Painters), presents an account of the artist's life. The room also serves as a venue for cultural events.

Atelier Giuliano Pedretti, Celerina

In the studio of his son, the sculptor Giuliano Pedretti (1924–2012), built directly adjacent to the family’s home and authentically preserved in its original state, a collection of sculptures from seven decades of the sculptor's work is presented. Giuliano Pedretti developed his complex language of forms through his masterful handling of light and shadow, dissolving the figures to the point of complete transparency. His openwork sculptures also reference the terrenzlas, a Romansh term that translates as "snow-free patches in the Engadin's landscape in pre-spring". Giuliano Pedretti also dedicated himself to the preservation of Romansh culture and created numerous sgraffito murals on houses and churches.

"Incorporating the light as an integrated part of the sculpture makes the latter appear as an autonomous object." - Quote from Giuliano Pedretti.
