Bergbaumuseum Graubünden Schmelzboden Davos
The Graubünden Museum of Mining visitors' centre and preserved mine-workings
The Graubünden Museum of Mining houses a comprehensive display of the day-to-day life of historic miners and the peculiarities of mining. The exhibition shows the hard work undertaken by miners from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. Covering the entire Canton of Graubünden, a sequence of mining epochs is revealed in maps, tools, mineral ores and crystals, models and many historical objects and images. The collection of ores from Graubünden is complemented by a smoky quartz crevice and a large collection of calcites. The exhibition occupies four storeys of the former Hitz’schen administrative building, which dates from the early 19th century. A visit to the museum can be combined with a guided tour of the mine-workings preserved at nearby Silberberg, where various tunnels and a restored miner’s refuge can be seen.
