Giardino dei Ghiacciai di Cavaglia

The natural monument from the ice age in the Val Poschiavo

The Giardino dei Ghiacciai di Cavaglia is a glacial garden in the Val Poschiavo, located near the Rhaetian Railway’s Cavaglia station. More than thirty glacial potholes (also known as giant’s kettles) can be viewed here. These cylindrical, smooth hollows in the rock were formed during the last ice age by the circular movements of meltwater and debris. The glacial potholes, some of which are several meters deep, are embedded in the alpine landscape south of the Bernina Pass, creating the impression of a natural garden. The glacial potholes are accessible via hiking trails. Information is conveyed by means of display boards. These also serve as stations of the themed trail for children whose subject is the giant Grummo. Another attraction of the glacial garden is the path through the nearby Cavagliasco Gorge, which leads to more glacial potholes and cave-like overhangs. The path through the gorge was designed by the well-known engineer and bridge builder Jürg Conzett.
