Mühle Aino

The open-air museum for craft skills

In San Carlo, a collection of pre-industrial and early industrial craft workshops that is unique in Switzerland has been maintained: A water mill and a saw mill used the water from a canal where blacksmiths along the then route of the Bernina road were able to perform repairs for horse freight carriers and coachmen. The mill and sawmill bear testimony to the transfer to industrial technology and both were fitted out with Francis turbines during the early 20th century. Since 2008, the mill has been featured together with the Casa Tomé (Poschiavo valley museum) in the project “Dal Campo alla Tavola”, which actively retraces agricultural life, for example during the harvest and the processing of buckwheat at the Aino mill through to preparation and final consumption of the food at Casa Tomé. The mill, the smith and the sawmill constitute an actual open-air museum of pre-industrial and early industrial craft skills. Both the functional method and technology of these operations are featured in San Carlo, as is the significance of the facilities within the context of everyday life. The presentation is made in the form of workshops and along instructional paths in the immediate proximity.
