Museo Moesano

The local museum of the "Magistri moesani"

The Moesano Museum uses historical documents and objects to tell the story of the valleys of Mesocco and Calanca, with the accent on archaeology. Apart from housing a series of important historical finds, the museum also operates an archaeological workshop for educational and experimental purposes. A second strand of the museum’s main activities is the permanent exhibition of works of the many baroque master-builders, architects, plasterers etc. of Mesocco, who were active in the 17th and 18th centuries, in southern Germany above all. The museum’s own building, which is an example of the Magistri Moesani architectural style, is a palazzo built between 1680 and 1700 by Giovanni Antonio Viscardi, who was, from 1685 onwards, the Royal Master Builder of the Electorate of Bavaria. The museum also organises rotating exhibitions of contemporary art in the mediaeval tower of Fiorenzana, in the neighbouring village of Grono. The Moesano Museum houses various ethnographic collections. The Magistri Moesani architectural style is a main point of reference. The exhibition deals comprehensively, in the form of original documents and historical building implements, with the works of the valley’s own Baroque architect, which can still be found throughout Europe. The museum’s archaeological department is being extended with the addition of a workshop, where school students will be able to carry out their own work and experiments.
