Museum Stamparia Strada
The Graubünden Printing Museum
Stamparia in Strada is a historical book press which has produced printed products that are of particular significance for Rhaeto-Romanic culture. The present museum shows original prints of the first translations of the bible into the Rhaeto-Romanic idioms Vallader (1679) and Sursilvan (1718), as well as a reconstruction of the first hand press used in Strada. The museum shows how printers’ families lived and worked. The museum is also devoted to Rhaeto-Romanic folk music and the legendary band “Ils Fränzlis da Tschlin”.The press goes back to Nuot Clà Janett, who founded a printer’s workshop at Tschlin in 1680 and moved it to Strada after a few years. With some interruptions, the printing press remained in operation for two centuries. Apart from many printed items, the Stamparia Strada also features a reconstruction of the only wooden press still maintained in Graubünden which dates back to the 17th century. The original press was transferred in 1920 for a token price to the Raetian Museum in Chur. In the folk music collection of the museum, performers featured include “Ils Fränzlis da Tschlin”.
