Ortsmuseum Schmitten
A small museum of social history in the Albula Valley
The Schmitten Local Museum presents pre-industrial life in the German-speaking town in the Albula valley and documents social change at the beginning of the modern era. Apart from traditional agriculture, the economically-caused emigration overseas is featured, as well as the new employment opportunities that came with the thriving tourism in Engadine, Davos and Lenzerheide. Situated in the erstwhile schoolhouse at Schmitten, the museum displays exhibits such as historical photos and an old captain uniform of a local Swiss Guard, as well as an unusual bicycle from the 19th century, a wooden vehicle planned for making progress over snow. The museum offers slide shows about the history of Schmitten and late Gothic frescoes in the neighbouring Luzuius chapel. Apart from agricultural devices, the Schmitten Local Museum also displays historical photographs that document social change in the village at the threshold of the modern era. Emigration and also new employment opportunities because of tourism are presented in documents.
