Pretorio Vicosoprano
The Round Tower of Bregaglia valley history
In Vicosoprano, the only still remaining mediaeval round tower of Graubünden was the seat of a court that was at the same time a customs building and the scene of witchcraft trials. This is presented in tours that last a good hour through the neighbourhood and the Pretorio itself, which was fitted out with a torture chamber, dungeon and pillory in 1592. Emphasis is also placed upon the Septimer and Maloja passes; in the Pretorio customes duty was paid for goods passing through. "Verbal history" is something that enjoys high popularity in Pretorio Vicosoprano because if requested, the village inhabitants will be delighted to explain the cultural specialities of the valley and life there as well as the unusual Bargajot dialect. The Pretorio with its mediaeval round tower displays a courtroom, a pillory, a torture chamber and a dungeon. Communication of the history in the Pretorio is made within the near environment around the site of the gallows by local people and features much about the Bregaglia valley culture and lifestyle of the past and present.
