State Archives of Graubünden
Centre for archiving and Graubünden’s history
The Staatsarchiv is the archive of the canton of Graubünden and its legal predecessors. The official records of the cantonal administration in particular are supplemented by numerous documents of private origin that are essential to the history of the canton. The archive material documents roughly 800 years of history. The rich collection includes deeds, files, minutes, manuscripts, plans, photos, printed papers and now also electronic data. The oldest document, a will, dates back to 1209. With the acquisition, indexing and storage of holdings worthy of being archived and of historically valuable documents, the Staatsarchiv and the other public archives (communal and regional archives) serve as the official memory of the canton. It enables an understanding of past state activity and provides re-searchers of Graubünden’s history with an authentic collection of source material. The Staatsarchiv’s holdings are accessible to the public and can be viewed free of charge, provided they are no longer subject to data protection restrictions.
