Talmuseum Chasa Retica
The Samnaun Valley Museum
The valley museum at the Chasa Retica in Samnaun-Plan shows in several rooms how a typical Samnaun farmer’s family lived between the 16th and 19th centuries. The historical everyday items were collected by the people of Samnaun over the years and are now a foundation of the local history museum. The Engadine farmhouse originates from the year 1658 and is richly decorated with sgraffito; paintings done onto plaster. With its building style, the Chasa Retica represents the history of the valley to where settlers moved in from the Lower Engadine, but was also influenced by the Tyrol because of its position.
One topic featured in the Chasa Retica is also the life and work of Benedictine monk and writer Maurus Carnot (1865-1939) who was born in Samnaun. His best-known work “Feurige Kohlen” (Coals of fire, 1902) was also translated into Polish and English.
