El Sol – a Miracle Device with Side Effects

What is the best remedy for rheumatism, gout, neuralgia, arteriosclerosis, insomnia or circulatory disorders? El Sol, of course. As simple as the name may seem, this device could be used in wonderfully varied ways. But there was a catch.

The violet-ray device was manufactured in Igis and was relatively straightforward to operate. A generator produced high-frequency alternating currents, and various electrodes could be applied to the parts of the body where electrotherapy was intended to have an effect. Yet this miracle machine had at least one notable side effect: it interfered with radio reception – and was therefore banned after the Second World War.

Still, El Sol devices can be viewed today. One such machine is on display at the Museum Regiunal Surselva in Ilanz. And those who are curious can already consult the user manual on Porta Cultura.
