Radioscola – the Romansh School Radio

For decades, the programmes of radioscola, the Romansh school radio service, sounded from brown Biennophones or other radio sets – sometimes directly in the classroom. Since the programmes covered a wide range of topics, the school radio, founded in 1955, was tuned in not only by schoolchildren but also by many others.

The radio broadcasts were accompanied by a school radio “newspaper”. The very first issue already illustrates the thematic diversity of radioscola: it covers topics ranging from crystals to the healing springs of Scuol and Tarasp. Over the decades, the material produced for the school radio and its accompanying booklet grew into something like a school library – and even extended beyond the school setting.

The school radio service was founded and primarily shaped by Alfons Maissen, who championed the Romansh language and literature for decades and, as a teacher at the Cantonal School, brought substantial didactic skill to the programmes and booklets. The school radio remained on the air until 1990.
