Little Kings with a Long-Standing Tradition – the Star Singers
Anyone who spends Three Kings’ Day (the feast of the Epiphany) in a Catholic village in Graubünden, will probably be lucky enough to come across the Biblical Magi and their entourage. This custom is mainly practised in the Surselva region, in central Graubünden, and the southern valleys – namely by children and young people. In Breil/Brigels, for instance, the entourage is led by a young captain in an old uniform, the "capitani", who is accompanied by several "serviturs", i.e. servants. An integral part of this tradition is the Star of Bethlehem, which is present wherever the custom is observed. Ultimately, it led the Three Magi to Jesus of Nazareth.
Together, the Star singers go from house to house, singing songs and bringing the New Year's blessing. In the past, the children were rewarded with goods rather than cash. However, in contemporary times, they often collect monetary donations, including for children's charities.
Among other occasions, the tradition of Star singing has been documented in a programme broadcast by Radiotelevisiun Svizra Rumantscha (RTR).
