Musei Valposchiavo
From the Baroque Mansion to the Mill
The Musei Valposchiavo bring together several museumsunder a single foundation: at the Museo Poschiavino, housed in the Palazzo de Bassus-Mengotti, a magnificent baroque building dating back to 1655, the art and culture of Poschiavo valley can be experienced particularly from the point of view of everyday life and the history of migration. On display are also collections of Etruscan ceramic work along with Indian ritual items and votive objects, making the centre of local history to a place of meeting between different cultures. Casa Tomé, whose architecture has reflected the valley's rural traditions since 1357,is putting the highlight on agriculture.
Since 2020, there has also been a cultural heritage repository at Aino. This is where items that are not on display at the official museum sites are stored.
Since 2022, the Musei Valposchiavo have also included Mulino Aino, a collection of pre-industrial and early industrial craft workshops that is unique in Switzerland has been maintained. Here, a water mill and a saw mill used the water from a canal, while the blacksmiths along the then route of the Bernina road were able to perform repairs for horse freight carriers and coachmen. The mill and sawmill bear testimony to the transfer to industrial technology and both were fitted out with Francis turbines during the early 20th century.
The collaboration between the different sites of the Musei Valposchiavo has given rise to the project «Dal campo alla tavola», which also offers the opportunity to carry out farming activities. Those with an interest can for example saw, process and also culinary enjoy buckwheat.
