Denkmalpflege Graubünden

Cantonal Office for the preservation of Graubünden’s architectural cultural heritage

Since its founding in 1960, the Denkmalpflege Graubünden has been the cantonal agency re-sponsible for the preservation of Graubünden’s architectural cultural heritage. In addition to buildings of all kinds, this includes valuable infrastructure facilities, gardens and public spaces as well as mobile cultural assets such as historical room interiors or railway carriages. The Denkmalpflege (built heritage conservation) advises private and public parties on altera-tions to listed buildings and assists professionals and authorities with the implementation of laws relating to high-quality Baukultur (literally “building culture”). By analysing and documenting the historic built environment, it raises awareness of existing architectural and spatial assets and thus con-tributes to the positive development of townscapes. On the cantonal level, the Denkmalpflege furthermore deals with issues relating to existing structures outside the building zone, historic traffic routes and matters concerning the location of new agricultural facilities. The Denkmalpflege’s offices at 89 Gürtelstrasse in Chur house a specialized library and an ana-logue archive which can be accessed for research on request.
