Biennale Bregaglia 2026 – «Transito»

Lush green meadows, villages shaped by both Swiss and Italian culture, vast chestnut forests, and majestic mountains – this is what travellers encounter in the Val Bregaglia. Yet every two years during the summer months, the valley’s idyllic landscape is enriched by exciting, thought-provoking contemporary artworks. National and international artists exhibit their work at various locations throughout the valley, offering visitors new perspectives on the Val Bregaglia.

The fourth edition of the Biennale Bregaglia will take place from 7 June to 27 September 2026. The “Transito”-themed festival leads visitors from Maloja to the national border near Castasegna. This year, the exhibition is accompanied by a collaboration between Porta Cultura and the Val Bregaglia’s cultural institutions: historical objects and documents enter into dialogue with the contemporary artworks, creating new connections and points of reference.

Transito – passage and transition – has long been a defining theme in the Val Bregaglia, a valley situated between the Engadin and Italy. Here, transit signifies not only physical movement, but also historical, cultural, and landscape transformation. This is reflected both in the contemporary artworks of the Biennale Bregaglia 2026 and in the historical objects and documents preserved by the valley’s cultural institutions.

Special thanks to the Hannes-Gruber-Kunstkabniett, the Società Storica Bregaglia, the Fondazione Garbald, the Pro Grigioni Italiano, the Ciäsa Granda und Atelier Giacometti and the Varlin Archiv.

Anyone wishing to explore the history, culture, and language of the Val Bregaglia beyond the Biennale itself is warmly invited to visit the valley’s museums, archives, and exhibitions in person.
